The Fable of Arachne (Las Hilanderas)
The painting showing women at work is both known as “The spinners” and The Fable of Arachne. It depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Arachne, a mortal weaver, challenges the goddess Athena to a weaving contest. Arachne's tapestry is so exquisite that it offends Athena, who transforms her into a spider.
Painted around 1656 by Diego Velázquez.
